Christina Altfeld

Born and raised in Sweden, Christina Altfeld emigrated to the United States at
just 11 years old. At the time, she had two primary sources of support: her family
and a Brownie Hawkeye camera that was given to her as a gift. This camera not
only sparked an early love for art in Christina’s life, but also served as a form of
visual expression as she navigated her new home and the unfamiliar English
language.
Throughout life, Christina developed her love for photography through self-
teaching, workshops, and classes at UCLA. After discovering printmaking from a
friend, she complemented her photographic work even further and expanded her
repertoire to an entirely new specialty centered around polymer etchings.
In an effort to further develop her printmaking abilities, she took classes at Santa
Barbara City College and studied under two master printmakers; Dan Weldon,
who is based in NY and Michael McCabe, who is based in New Mexico.
Featured in exhibits both locally and worldwide, her award-winning work has
been recognized on an international level.
An avid traveler, Christina has touched 5 separate continents through her
photographic efforts including North and South America, Asia, Europe, and
Africa. Whether traveling through China, the Middle East, the Pacific Islands,
Hawaii, or beyond, she is always ready for inspiration to strike with a camera by
her side.
Having lived in Maui for 15 years, Christina now resides on the coast in Ventura,
California. An avid volunteer, her efforts include teaching workshops to foster
youth both locally and at Free Arts for Abused Children in LA. She was also an
artist in residence at Channel Islands Maritime Museum. There, she created a
hand printed book that used letters written to her grandparents to outline her
experiences as she traveled to the US by boat.
Currently, Christina is exploring new methods to layer images while using
numerous printmaking methods on a single work of art. She is featured in the
permanent collection at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura, CA, and is a
juried member of the Los Angeles Printmaking Society, Santa Barbara
Printmakers, and Buenaventura inkspots.
No matter where Christina finds herself, she will always discover inspiration in
the people, architecture, and nature surrounding her.
